{"id":1848,"date":"2011-12-10T21:06:30","date_gmt":"2011-12-10T21:06:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.robertstephenhawker.co.uk\/?page_id=1848"},"modified":"2011-12-14T12:17:29","modified_gmt":"2011-12-14T12:17:29","slug":"the-plaint-of-morwenstow-by-henry-sewell-stokes","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.robertstephenhawker.co.uk\/?page_id=1848","title":{"rendered":"The Plaint of Morwenstow by Henry Sewell Stokes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>That he was brave the white-haired cragsmen tell,<br \/>\nRound all the coast from Hartland to Pentire;<br \/>\nAnd shipwreck&#8217;d mariners remember well<br \/>\nHow grand he look&#8217;d when flashed the beacon-fire.<\/p>\n<p>As down the cliff he rush&#8217;d against the gale,<br \/>\nWell might he seem the Angel of the Storm;<br \/>\nWhile his deep voice the stranded bark would hail,<br \/>\nHis strong arm stretch to save some gasping form.<\/p>\n<p>When falls Tintagel&#8217;s tower, it&#8217;s solemn chime<br \/>\nIn Hawker&#8217;s rhythm will echo on the blast,<br \/>\nAnd still repeat, &#8216;Come to thy God in time!&#8217;<br \/>\nAnd say to each, &#8216;Come to thy God at last!&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>He heard and went: but where his dust should sleep,<br \/>\nTears on a vacant sepulchre are shed;<br \/>\nAnd still the cry comes from Morwenna&#8217;s steep,<br \/>\nComplaining that they bring not home the dead.<\/p>\n<p>The seabirds miss him on the headland&#8217;s verge,<br \/>\nAnd wailing seek their guardian &#8216;mong these graves;<br \/>\nAnd to the cavern&#8217;d shore&#8217;s Aeolian dirge<br \/>\nSucceeds the &#8216;De Profundis&#8217; of the waves.<\/p>\n<p>Rest where he may, this place is hallowed ground:<br \/>\nGenius, Love, Duty, tried by crucial pain,<br \/>\nHere in one noble human mould were found,<br \/>\nThe secrets of his soul with God remain.<\/p>\n<p>From <em>The Life and Letters of R.
